Special Programs
Reading
Recovery
At
Scoresby Primary School, we are very proud of the Literacy levels
achieved by our students. One of the cornerstones of this success we
believe is our Reading Recovery Program. Targeted at students in Year
1, Reading Recovery is an intensive, research based program designed to
provide children who are experiencing difficulties learning to read,
with the specific skills and strategies needed. Our fully trained
Reading Recovery Teacher takes children for one on one sessions each day
over a number of months, until they have reached the necessary reading
benchmark for Year 1 students in the state of Victoria.
Prep-Year 6 Buddies
Program
Our Prep
and Year 6 Students participate in a 'Buddies' program where a child
from Prep is paired up with a child from our senior school. This
program involves children in a range of fun activities designed to
promote relationships and a sense of caring between the older and
younger children in our school.
Swimming Program
Students
in Years Prep to 6 are offered the chance to participate in an extensive
2 week swimming program at Paul Sadler Swimland (P-2) and Dandenong
Oasis Swimming pool (3-6). Students are taken by Victorian accredited
swimming teachers and taught a range of skills ranging from staying
afloat, the four swimming strokes, to survival in dangerous situations.
Children of all ages and abilities are catered for and at the completion
of the program, are given certificates outlining their various levels of
achievement.
External
Competitions/Challenges
In
addition to our classroom based and Reading Recovery programs, we offer
students the chance to participate in a range of external competitions
and challenges designed to cater for high achieving students, as well as
those who want to challenge themselves in different areas. The
University of NSW competitions offer children across the state of
Victoria the chance to sit written 'exams' in a range of curriculum
areas including writing, maths ICT and science. Children are then
ranked against other children in their age group from across the State
and are awarded certificates ranging from Participation to High
Distinction. The Premiers Reading Challenge and MS Readathon are
incentive-based programs which encourage children to read at home.
Christian Religious
Education (C.R.E)
Students
from Prep to Year 6 are offered the opportunity to participate in a
weekly CRE program, conducted by fully trained CRE teachers, where
children learn about Christian Beliefs and Values.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Scoresby caters for students with ESL backgrounds and we have a range of programs to assist them, including Reading Recovery as well interpreters for some languages.
Hearing Impaired
Students
We have a
small number of students in our school who are hearing impaired. The
students are visited regularly by a member of staff from the Victorian
School for the Deaf.
PMP
Students in
Prep participate in a Perceptual Motor Skills Program (PMP), a program
designed to improve the gross motor skills of young children.
Prep Transition
To assist with the smooth transition of kinder children into Primary School life, a number of opportunities exist for families to connect with the school community at Scoresby PS. These opportunities include:
* Orientation days - where children become familiar with the classroom setting and experience a range of activities; including storytime, crafts, science, music & PMP.
* School Tours & Open Night - for prospective parents to view the classroom 'in action'.
* Regular contact with the local kindergartens & child care centres - to liaise, promote collaboration and keep the community informed with relevant information.
* Prep Information Night - to provide parents with detailed information about the curriculum and the school program.
Secondary School Transition
Not only does reaching Grade 6 signify the final year of your child’s primary schooling, it is the year we as a school, help prepare and support families in making the important decision as to which secondary school each child will continue their education. Early in the Grade 6 year, families are advised of open days and nights of all secondary colleges in the vicinity. We organise secondary school enrolments between families and the schools of their choice and ensure that each family is notified of secondary school offers for the following year. As a primary school, we are very fortunate to share close ties with Scoresby Secondary College. Throughout the year, our grade 5/6’s are invited to share with them, a variety of teaching and learning activities. We enjoy maintaining contact with our previous year’s grade 6 students and take every opportunity to share their experiences of beginning year 7. In December of each year our children invited to attend an Orientation Day at their new school. The grade 6 teachers also meet with each secondary college’s year 7 transition coordinator, to exchange information and discuss the individual needs of the children they will be receiving.
Tuesday Lunch Club (TLC), Lunchtime Activities & Social Group Skills
We recently began these two programs as student rewards and to facilitate student socialisation and group working skills. The Social Skills Groups are multi-aged groups of 7-8 students who meet every second Monday for 45 minutes. A variety of games and activities are used to enforce skills such as teamwork, friendship groups, self-esteem and getting along skills. TLC is run every Tuesday lunchtime and involves fun activities such making slime!
*Due to building works we are currently running extra clubs- such as Movie Club on Mondays, Garden Club on Wednesdays, Computers on Thursdays and Book Club on Fridays.*
